Somalia is at risk of sliding further into crisis as gains made since 2011’s famine are eroded by conflict, drought, floods, weak basic services, rising food prices, access constraints and reduced humanitarian funding. The military offensive against anti-Government elements has caused significant displacement since March 2014. Over 1 million people (62 per cent IDPs) require lifesaving assistance and 2.16 million people remain highly vulnerable to shocks. Acute malnutrition in children under-5 has increased to 218,000, including 43,800 with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM). Extremely low immunization rates have led to almost 9,000 measles cases in 2014 and five confirmed polio cases since June 2014. Drought in many areas threatens food security while major floods in other areas threaten lives and livelihoods. 3.2 million Somalis lack access to health care, 1.7 million children lack access to education and 2.75 million people lack sustainable access to WASH services. Sexual and gender-based violence (GBV) against women and girls is widespread and armed groups commit grave violations against children. Road blockages, illegal checkpoints and active hostilities on main supply routes require airlifting supplies, thereby increasing humanitarian costs and limiting the scope of the response.
Children have been living in the harshest of conditions for over two decades in Somalia. Consecutive years of droughts and conflict have resulted in repeated crop failure, depletion of livestock, rising food prices, deteriorating purchasing power, eroded coping mechanisms and a perpetual state of emergency, with women and children bearing the brunt as the most destitute and vulnerable.
Today in Somalia most children are lacking of Education mean while some children are lacking of their day living foods. With all this tribulations, HINNA (Women Pioneers for Peace and Life) has registered over 500 orphan children who are the most vulnerable from different spaces in south central Somalia. These children are lacking of Education, shelters, Food/Nutrition and health care. in addition these children are orphans and they don’t have their parents or they have one who cannot take their responsibility due to extra poverty. However, with a matter of time these children can be resulted children to associate with extremist groups or armed forces in a way to meet their basic foods.
HINNA is requesting from international/local donors to meet the humanitarian needs of the children in Somalia. HINNA is ready to facilitate any service or assistance to these most vulnerable children and the continuity of basic services for the most vulnerable populations and will contribute to building resilience in the face of future shocks. Currently HINNA is unable to support delivery of lifesaving.
