Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

Water Supply and Sanitation Infrastructure

Our WASH program focuses on improving access to clean water and sanitation facilities in communities that lack these basic services. Water scarcity is a significant issue in many parts of Somalia, especially in IDP camps and drought-affected regions. HINNA provides emergency water supply through water trucking, ensuring that displaced families and communities have access to safe drinking water. In addition to emergency response, HINNA constructs and rehabilitates critical water infrastructure, including wells, boreholes, and water tanks, to provide a more sustainable water supply. HINNA also addresses sanitation needs by constructing and maintaining latrines in IDP camps and rural villages. These facilities are essential for preventing the spread of diseases, particularly in overcrowded areas where sanitation is poor. Latrine construction projects are designed with a focus on privacy and safety, particularly for women and children, ensuring that they have access to dignified sanitation facilities.

Hygiene Promotion

Hygiene promotion is another key component of the WASH program. HINNA conducts community education sessions on proper hygiene practices, such as hand washing, safe water storage, and the use of latrines. These sessions are aimed at reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases, which are a leading cause of illness in many of the communities we serve. HINNA also distributes hygiene kits that include soap, sanitary items, and water purification tablets to promote better hygiene and prevent the spread of diseases like cholera and diarrhea, which are common in areas with limited access to clean water and sanitation.
